Following the worldwide premiere of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood animated series based on the Dota 2 universe, Valve’s collaboration with Netflix continues with the addition of the Free to Play documentary on the streaming service.
Free to Play is a Valve-only production, which is unlike the animated series. Also, it is a standalone documentary instead of a season series. The movie was released in March 2014 as one of Valve’s chronicles into the fabled The International annual E-sports event.
Although Free to Play would be made available through subscription-based streaming services, it has always been available to watch for free on the official Valve YouTube channel and on Steam. However, the exposition on official platforms like Netflix is sure to generate more interest in esports and the tournament. This is one of Valve’s many endeavors to lead up to the long-awaited The International 10 this year
Free to Play focuses on the professional and personal lives of three of the most prolific Dota 2 players that competed at the very first The International tournament, back in 2011. The film takes a critical look at the lives of Benedict “hyhy” Lim, Daniel “Dendi” Ishutin, and Clinton “Fear” Loomis.
The three professional Dota players participated in the legacy first The International which was the most lucrative esports event at the time with a prize pool of million dollars. The central focus of the film is how their commitment to DotA had affected their lives and how this debut tournament for the sequel, Dota 2 would mean for their career at that point.
