A strike that began last December should have been nothing more than a peaceful demonstration to highlight what employees asserted was unfair treatment. However, what resulted has become an international episode that even the United Nations has condemned.
A meeting between management and staff regarding job lay-offs at casino resort NagaWorld, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is due to be mediated by the country’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, said Sithar Chhim, a labor union representative.
The chairman of Cambodia casino operator NagaCorp Ltd has affirmed that its gambling business at the firm’s NagaWorld complex in Phnom Penh has been steady in the first quarter, notwithstanding the global coronavirus alert and the shutdown of the Macau casino market.
According to a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, NagaCorp., which owns the complex, has seen the venue take in $1.29 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR) from January to September, marking a 20.2% increase over the same period last year. Net gaming revenue at the property has seen an even bigger year-on-year jump.
NagaCorp has outperformed properties in Asia and moving forward its outlook is better than that for Macau, Singapore and the Philippines, according to Morgan Stanley Asia.
The World Poker Tour (WPT) says it will link with the NagaWorld casino resort c0mplex (pictured) in Phnom Penh to stage a WPT Cambodia poker tournament from November 16 to 25.
