The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Nov 16, that its inaugural Olympic Esports Week will take place in Singapore between June 22 and 25 2023.
In partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Sport Singapore, and the Singapore National Olympic Committee, The OEW will allow participants from all over the world to experience and witness the best of virtual sports.
The IOC has long flirted with the concept of competitive virtual gaming being part of the Olympic Movement in future years, with IOC president Thomas Bach outright asking “Could esports one day be part of the Olympic Games?” as long ago as 2018.
SNOC board member and IOC vice-president Ng Ser Miang said: “The Singapore NOC shares the Olympic Movement’s ambitions of exploring the development of virtual sports. Singapore has a track record of successfully hosting some of the biggest events in the virtual sports and esports calendar–we are honored to be collaborating with the IOC to bring this shared vision to life.”
