On Thursday, 19 May 2022 the FIFA Referees Committee announced the lists with the names of the selected match officials for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, said the criteria they have always used is ‘quality first. The selected match officials represent the highest level of refereeing worldwide. The 2018 World cup was a huge success, partly because of the high standard of refereeing, and they will do their best to be even better in a few months in Qatar.
The 36 referees, 69 assistant referees, and 24 video match officials (VMO) have been selected in close collaboration with the six confederations, based on their quality and performances in FIFA tournaments and other international and domestic competitions.
Selected match officials will participate in early summer in several seminars (Asunción, Madrid, and Doha), review and analyze video clips of real match situations, and take part in practical training sessions with the players, which will be filmed to enable participants to receive instant feedback information from the instructors.
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Referee Committee has also appointed three female referees and three female assistant referees.
